I AM A STORYTELLER
At her core, Moriah McReynolds is a storyteller. She has learned to tell engaging and insightful stories by combining her training in journalism with the practices of illustration, videography, and other forms of visual communication. While these fields may seem separate from one another on the surface, McReynolds believes that they work beautifully together to create powerful narratives. She is constantly learning new ways to combine the two practices to elevate her storytelling abilities, allowing her to convey important, relevant information to wider, more diverse audiences.
McReynolds began her career as a storyteller by obtaining her bachelor’s degree in illustration and graphic design at Indiana Wesleyan University. Upon graduating, McReynolds became a graphic designer for small businesses in Marion, Indiana. As a resident of the small town, she became an active community member, participating in events, creating unique designs for local businesses, and learning about its history to educate the public on its storied past.
In January 2020, McReynolds moved to the DMV (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) area to strengthen her storytelling abilities by studying journalism at Georgetown University. As a grad student, McReynolds has learned how to ethically report local and national stories, even in the midst of a global pandemic. She even learned new techniques, like photography and videography, to expand her portfolio and skillset, making her a more capable visual designer and storyteller. She graduated in May 2022.
In addition to her classes, McReynolds participated in On the Pulse News, a student-led broadcasting group, that partnered with DCTV and Georgetown’s Society of Professional Journalists branch; we worked to produce news packages containing local, national, and international news. McReynolds served as the associate producer of OTP; as such, she helped the Project Director, Ivy Lyons, plan and execute the show. Additionally, developed graphics and story packages for the show.
McReynolds’ experience as a graphic designer, illustrator, and journalist provides her with a unique perspective and a comprehensive set of skills. She utilizes her talents to craft important and engaging stories that serve to educate the public.
